<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Music connects naturally with math. In fact, rhythm <i>is</i> math. </span></span><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This video models how I introduce iconic rhythm notation with fraction strips. It is designed to help teachers prepare to teach this type of lesson, but it can also be used in the classroom to prepare students to compose and perform simple patterns. If used in the classroom, pause the video to further discuss math or musical concepts and adapt to student readiness. </span></div>

<br /></div>
Here's an engaging movement and music activity I recently created. It's useful and joyful in the elementary music or dance classroom as well as the regular classroom as a 'brain break' (especially on testing days).<br />
<br />
Notes: The number of popcorn pieces on the stage floor indicate how many beats each action should be performed. "Pat' is done with hands, and 'tap' is done with finger tips. The visuals change on the last beat of the previous section/measure to allow processing time.<br />
<br />
Integrate by helping children predict/recall the sequence of movement as well as the mathematical relationship between 16, 8, and 4 beats. Assess accuracy in performing with a steady beat. ENJOY!<br />
<br />
The darling kids clip art was created and licensed by <a href="http://edu-clips.com/" target="_blank">EduClips</a> , and the stage background was created by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Clip-Art-Stage-751858" target="_blank">EnAz</a>. Thank you, ladies!<br />

I teach this tune to K-2 children (fall verse) in late September and revisit it as the seasons change, moving from a singing game and rhythm exploration to iconic notation and composition activities, depending on students' readiness. This is a great piece for discovering or reinforcing 'la.'</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The children enjoy creating new lyrics for this simple but lovely melody as the seasons change. <span style="background-color: white; color: #202020; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">As an extension, older children enjoy switching up the solfege/rhythm cards and creating something new. </span></div>

As an extension in second grade, we list words that match our <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rhythm-Building-Blocks-Border-Board-Topper-Posters-Interactive-Bulletin-Bd-1881506" target="_blank">rhythm building blocks</a> and select four to create a new song as a class. Then students work in pairs to compose original (very simple) four-phrase melodies based on rhythmic text. The kids get quite excited and pleased with their creations. It's delightful to see my youngest students so engaged in meaningful music exploration! In twos, students composed phrases based on Halloween- and autumn-themed text. Then a student pair (A) combined their phrase with one other team (B) to create a four-phrase song. I had them choose from these forms: ABAB, AABB, or AABA. We were able to explore rhythm/syllable relationships, D = la pentatonic (minor pentatonic: D, F, G, A, C, D') with Orff instruments, four-phrase form, and the power of collaboration. This project was engaging and easy to implement with my 3rd-5th grade kiddos. My students learned a lot and were proud of their compositions! Details of this learning project and ready-to-go materials are available in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Words-Rhythms-Rhythm-Literacy-Composing-Activities-919769" target="_blank">Halloween Words & Rhythms - Literacy and Composing Activities Set</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My younger students explored syllabic rhythms using autumn-themed iconic notation. I chanted simple four-beat rhythmic phrases and had students pat the beat on their laps as we repeated the words. (Phrase examples: "pumpkin pumpkin patch patch" or "witch's broom witch's broom." Then we chanted the words and touched pumpkin beats. We 'discovered' that there was one word on each beat, so next, I had students put one candy corn on each beat. Then we finger-tapped the syllables of the phrase and 'discovered' that some beats had more than one sound. And finally, students 'notated' the rhythm by placing additional candies on beats that had two sounds. This was an extension/assessment of the activities we did with my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Jack-Jack-Jack-o-Lantern-Four-Fun-Fall-Music-GamesActivities-911065" target="_blank">Jack Jack Jack-o-Lantern Rhythm Activities Set</a>.</div>

This picture doesn't look like much, but oh, it WAS! My students absolutely loved conducting classical works and movie themes in the dark, using light sticks as batons. Students were thrilled to practice 2, 3, 4, and 5-beat conducting patterns to selections composed in minor keys. (I was able to make the light sticks last for two days by keeping them in the freezer when we weren't using them.)<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I love using iconic notation and manipulatives in my music lessons. When exploring pitch patterns (solfege or note addresses), the <b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: red;">h</span><span style="color: orange;">a</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">n</span><span style="color: #3d85c6;">d</span> <span style="color: blue;">s</span><span style="color: purple;">t</span><span style="color: red;">a</span><span style="color: orange;">f</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">f </span></span></b> is a powerful and ultimately convenient tool. It is always <span style="color: red;">'at hand'</span> and provides instant <span style="color: red;">'hands-on'</span> learning experiences. (Pardon the puns; I can't resist!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If the hand staff is a new concept/technique to you, you can adopt it easily and quickly. Simply have students hold their left hands in front of them, palm toward body, and treat their digits as the five lines on a staff. Have students touch on lines (fingers) or in spaces (between fingers). Identify a starting point, e.g. "G on the second line is so," and touch 'notes' as you sing simple pitch patterns. You might also find it useful to have students trace a clef of their palm to help them envision the staff and identify "G."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I like to use visuals to help students relate their hands to the staff. Here are a few examples of things I've done: </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJ0RyDvGhzk/VCc0OGuoLEI/AAAAAAAABc4/oYQVTRmUR0Q/s1600/photo%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJ0RyDvGhzk/VCc0OGuoLEI/AAAAAAAABc4/oYQVTRmUR0Q/s1600/photo%2B3.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I post a hand silhouette that corresponds to existing staff lines on my whiteboard. If you don't have a staff-lined whiteboard, create a poster by tracing your hand and drawing staff lines that extend from finger tips. (The above picture is a bit distorted. The one below is better.) </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I helped music teachers who attended one of my workshops make these gloves and flying notes. The gloves are inexpensive, stretchy knit ($1 per pair) and fit children's to adult's hands. It was a quick, easy and useful project. Kids love these!</span></div>

Yes, it's one of those crazy projects I envisioned and created late at night! I used a heavier fabric glove, five dowel pieces, black paint, needle and black thread, and a touch of glue. My students get a kick out of this one, but it's not nearly as practical as the glove pictured above. Thought I'd share it anyway and give you a glimpse into my strange teacher mind. : )</span></td></tr>

Anytime I'm throwing something away, I explore its recycling options; and turning a used item into a musical instrument is my <i>favorite</i> recycling option! The other day, as I used the last section of sticky-tape on a lint roller, I immediately imagined a maraca. The handle fit perfectly in my hand, and most of the work was already done. It only took about 20 minutes to complete this project.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B4OovjmFwIY/U9kNJrx2yLI/AAAAAAAABa4/QRdKqcnRjbY/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B4OovjmFwIY/U9kNJrx2yLI/AAAAAAAABa4/QRdKqcnRjbY/s1600/photo+5.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-twGkHrgsNLY/U9kNJuk1KDI/AAAAAAAABa0/fICGmE3dmd4/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-twGkHrgsNLY/U9kNJuk1KDI/AAAAAAAABa0/fICGmE3dmd4/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">Materials:</span><br />
<br />
Plastic lint roller handle<br />
1 pkg. of small glass<br />
beads (seed beads)<br />
Small funnel<br />
Glue (plastic cement)<br />
Toothpick<br />
Paper and markers<br />
(or scrapbook paper)<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">Instructions:</span><br />
There is a small hole in the top center of the large end of the lint roller. You may need to make it a tiny bit larger, but keep it as small a possible. Using a funnel (or piece of paper wrapped into a cone), put the beads into the cylinder.<br />
<br />
Break a tip off of the toothpick to serve as a plug. Then put a dab of glue over the filling hole, stick the toothpick tip into the hole, and put another tiny dab of glue over it. <br />
<br />
Create a colorful, geometric design on a piece of paper cut to fit the cylinder section of the lint roller (or use some printed scrapbook paper as I did because I was in a hurry on this one). Glue the paper around and onto the cylinder.<br />
<br />
Please note: the maraca will sound best if you hold it with the handle on top (upside down). This will allow the beads to move freely rather than get trapped in the handle. Cha-cha-cha!<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Here's a quick and fun instrument project I shared recently at BYU Arts Express in my 'STEAM' session. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k7VZHAIcw40/U8Fa-rp7VqI/AAAAAAAABZ0/1yaeicqjThU/s1600/Trombone+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k7VZHAIcw40/U8Fa-rp7VqI/AAAAAAAABZ0/1yaeicqjThU/s1600/Trombone+1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">When designing/engineering an instrument, always keep in mind that a</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">ny
musical instrument requires three mechanisms: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> (1) material or technique to produce
VIBRATION, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> (2) material to act as an AMPLIFIER of sound waves, and </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> (3) mechanism
or technique to control or VARY PITCH.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Since the player's buzzing lips are the source of vibration, this ‘trombone’ only requires the pitch variation and amplification mechanisms, and thus, it's very easy to make. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: red;">MATERIALS:</span><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A length of cold water pipe (blue PEX, 1/2” diameter)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A
length of hot water pipe (red PEX, 5/8” diameter)<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A
plastic funnel that will fit either over or inside one of your pipes </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> (The funnel can be trimmed to fit if its neck tapers.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Stickers or colored tape for decorating (if desired)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: red;">TOOLS:</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A ruler or measuring tape</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A marker</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A small hacksaw or sturdy knife for cutting</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Duco Cement or other plastic cement for gluing funnel to pipe</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">PEX pipe is very easy and inexpensive to use. You will find it available at hardware and home improvement stores. I can cut it with small hacksaw (or even a sturdy paring knife), and its filings/dust doesn't have the respiratory dangers of PVC. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8oJiU3TkGkI/U8FUAvI77iI/AAAAAAAABZY/Blz7LIUzMIA/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8oJiU3TkGkI/U8FUAvI77iI/AAAAAAAABZY/Blz7LIUzMIA/s1600/photo+3.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
Measure and mark each pipe, the blue, smaller one should be an inch or two longer than the red, larger one. For this instrument, I used 13.5 and 12.5 inch lengths. (Note: It's tempting to cut the pipes longer, but pitch control will be reduced by leaking air, and students' arms don't reach more than a couple of feet anyway.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-73bjSydrmVg/U8FUAkQMZWI/AAAAAAAABZU/UPUGz_IlKRc/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-73bjSydrmVg/U8FUAkQMZWI/AAAAAAAABZU/UPUGz_IlKRc/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Over
the years, I've spent countless hours scouring the internet for good music
notation clip art and music fonts to insert into music worksheets, flashcards,
and presentations. (Yes, I do use music notation software, but sometimes music
educators simply need to include music notation in word processing or
presentation files.) I organized folders of various note, rest, clef
and music symbol images I found on the Net, but their styles and sizes
were inconsistent. I also found that I could insert some notes and symbols
from my music software into text boxes, which was useful but non-intuitive and
very time-consuming. I eventually purchased a rather archaic music
font, and although it wasn't my dream come true, I was glad to have
consistently sized and shaped symbols. While I kept wishing for something more
user-friendly and efficient, I learned to work around or live with its limitations:
(1) its preset note-spacing made it very hard to control document layout, (2)
it wasn't intuitive, and (3) when I typed beamed notes for combination
rhythms, the 'seams' showed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Fast
forward... </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A
few years later, as I was studying clip art and font design, I
realized I could solve my music notation frustrations and provide for my own needs! And now my resulting
projects are available to others via the Web (TPT and Etsy). I figure it's time to 'toot
my own horn' here on my blog and let readers know about these products since
I'm receiving such great feedback about them. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; font-weight: normal;">Readers
may have noticed my recent ‘leave of absence’ from blogging and music materials production. I have been in transition between jobs, homes, and cities, and the
move has taken time and energy beyond description. I am happy and anxious to
get back to posting!</span></h2>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In
June, (yes, in the middle of moving), I had the opportunity to teach a couple
of workshops at the annual Arts Express Conference, sponsored by the BYU Arts
Partnership. This year, the theme was “Full STEAM Ahead,” referring to the
inclusion of arts education (thus the “A”) with the ‘STEM’ subjects. Instrument-making
aligned PERFECTLY with the engineering process and some important math and
science concepts (fractions, harmonics, frequency, amplitude, acoustics, etc.). </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">I had the opportunity to collaborate and present with a very fine dance
educator, Angela Challis; and together, we helped teachers explore dance and music integrations, create instruments, and compose both music and choreography. The teachers who attended made it such fun because they were creative, collaborative, and willing to 'play' in more ways than one. It was an absolute blast! </span><br />

who attended built a mini stomp stick (<a href="http://mymusicalmagic.blogspot.com/2013/08/stumpf-fiddles-and-stomp-sticks.html" target="_blank">see previous post</a>) and then composed layered ostinatos
and movement using their instruments. Then we divided participants into four groups, and each
group constructed a different instrument – (1) a mini washtub bass (post to
come), (2) a water pipe trombone <a href="http://mymusicalmagic.blogspot.com/2014/07/water-pipe-trombone.html" target="_blank">(new post</a>), (3) a panpipe (<a href="http://mymusicalmagic.blogspot.com/2013/06/how-to-make-home-made-panpipe-pan-flute.html" target="_blank">previous post</a>),

<span style="font-size: large;">I'm a <span style="color: #cc0000;">music 'junkie'</span> in more ways than one! </span>(1) I am definitely hooked on music. I can't imagine life without it. (2) I hear music in everything - movement, language, environments, machinery, and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">junk</span></b>. And if you follow my blog, you know I get a kick out of making instruments from throw-away and found items.<br />
<br />
In my last post about <a href="http://mymusicalmagic.blogspot.com/2014/02/how-to-make-bottle-guitar.html" target="_blank">how to make a bottle guitar</a>, I promised more to come, so here are a few of my chordophone gems. These aren't just noise-makers; they are instruments capable of a fairly decent tone and a pitch range between four and eight notes. I have made these with groups of 20-30 students at a time (having done the cutting and drilling ahead of time). Here's a demo video of the twist-top instrument (pictures and instructions below).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx2rnBTCWrlrw-JsWfa1etPOH3YxzxLYJEsajNE2OElJJbqsOJa9voPUuB2t_cb0uJTzUvvXfY7uJvZ1dtE3g' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Materials</span><br />
A plastic bottle with a twist-top lid (rigid enough to support string tension)<br />
String - heavy fishing line, thin wire, or a piece of a broken guitar string<br />
Two plastic pony beads or buttons<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Tools</span><br />
An electric drill (Please have an adult do the drilling and cutting.)<br />
An X-acto knife, pocket knife or small paring knife<br />
Felt-tip marker<br />
Scissors<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">How To</span><br />
(1) Drill a small hole in the bottom center of your bottle.<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
(2) Mark the area you want to cut out for a sound hole (approximately 3 cm wide by 8 cm long, or 1.2 in by 3 in). Puncture the bottle with your knife in the center of the area you have marked, and then carefully cut to and around the inside edge of your line. Note: Avoid cutting the opening too big because it will weaken the bottle. On some bottles, you can use scissors to cut the plastic once the hole is started.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-50TOkfDW3UY/UzEInT9LA0I/AAAAAAAABPQ/QYADRm_TZ_I/s1600/IMG_1707.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-50TOkfDW3UY/UzEInT9LA0I/AAAAAAAABPQ/QYADRm_TZ_I/s1600/IMG_1707.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-50TOkfDW3UY/UzEInT9LA0I/AAAAAAAABPQ/QYADRm_TZ_I/s1600/IMG_1707.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(3) Tie one end of your string to a bead (or button) using a square knot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6duLFFSa3No/UzEIoJssnrI/AAAAAAAABPc/7vcelaTXy3I/s1600/IMG_1705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6duLFFSa3No/UzEIoJssnrI/AAAAAAAABPc/7vcelaTXy3I/s1600/IMG_1705.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(4) Twist the lid to the open position, remove it from the bottle and keep it close by.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(5) Push the free end of the string into the hole you drilled in the bottom of the bottle. Guide the string through the bottle and out the top. Then push the string through the twist-top lid and screw the lid back onto the bottle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(6) Pull the string as tight as possible with one hand while turning the twist-top to the closed position with your other. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8RrJaKAWPjs/UzEIi2CVeII/AAAAAAAABPI/Fd8dj-Y61rU/s1600/IMG_1710.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8RrJaKAWPjs/UzEIi2CVeII/AAAAAAAABPI/Fd8dj-Y61rU/s1600/IMG_1710.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(7) Draw the top piece of string through a bead (or button) a couple of times, pulling tightly. Then tie a square knot under the bead and trim excess string.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(8) Decorate with stickers or marker if desired. Enjoy! As in the video above, pluck the string through the sound hole and twist the lid to change pitch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some variations using various bottles (including a 2 liter pop bottle, a pancake syrup bottle, and a one liter pop bottle). In place of a twist top, tie the string to a clothespin or short wooden dowel and tip the stick to create tension on the string.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(1) 33 treble spaces-only words/slides,</div>
(2) 28 treble lines-only slides,<br />
(3) a combination set with a whopping 83 words, and<br />
(4) a set of printable or projectable note-spelling staff pages, icons and instructions for several activities with a magnetic whiteboard or as a floor game. (Pictures are hyperlinked to the products.)<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
Also, in appreciation to my followers, I'm including a printable or projectable staff page below (from the Treble Treasures set). Just click on the bottom image in this post to enlarge or print it. You can project this and use it on a whiteboard or print it and have students 'spell' various words using candies, magic coins (pennies) or math counters as notes and have fun! : )<br />

</div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you follow my blog, you know by now that I enjoy making instruments out of found items just for the fun (and challenge) of it. I also love to help students create instruments that actually make music.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Making a good chordophone (stringed instrument), not just a look-alike, can be a challenging project. Through trial and error, I've found a couple of easy ways to create playable, decent sounding string instruments that can produce a variety of pitches.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In making any instrument, there are three main components to consider: (1) a source of vibration, (2) a resonator or hollow cavity to amplify the sound, and (3) a device or technique for regulating/varying pitch. When creating a stringed instrument, suspending the string while supporting its tension presents a unique challenge. Having a strong fingerboard and solid hollow body are keys to success. In this post, I want to share my bottle guitar ideas with some basic guidelines for creating these. </span><br />

<span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Small hack saw if your plastic is extra hard</span><br />
<span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Needle-nose pliers if using metal string</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;"> Glue</span> <span style="color: red;">(to hold nut or bridge in place)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: red;"> </span><span style="color: blue;">Please have an adult do any cutting and drilling.</span></i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></i></span>
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Instructions:</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(1)</span> Decide how you will attach the string to the fingerboard. You can attach it at each end which will require holes at each end (as in the green guitar) or wrap it completely around the fingerboard and connect the ends on the back side of the stick. Drill holes if needed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(2)</span> Design a nut (a small piece of wood or plastic that will hold the string above the fingerboard) and attach it to the top end of the fingerboard. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(3)</span> Design a bridge (piece of wood or plastic about 1 cm or 1/3 inch high) to insert under the string and suspend it above the fingerboard. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(4)</span> Setting the bridge aside for later, tighten your string onto the fingerboard (as tight as possible).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(5)</span> Create the body of your instrument by cutting a sound hole (and plucking space) in the front/face of your bottle. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(6)</span> Cut or drill notches in the bottom and neck of the bottle to snugly fit and support your fingerboard. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(Please study pictures below.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(7)</span> Insert your fingerboard into the bottle neck and slightly through the slot in the bottom of your bottle.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(8)</span> Insert the bridge under your string(s).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(9)</span> Decorate and mark finger placement if desired.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">(10)</span> Pluck the string through the sound hole with your dominant hand, and press the string against the fingerboard with your other hand to change the pitch. Have fun!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After presenting a full-day workshop and attending (and absolutely enjoying) UMEA, I am a bit slow posting some Valentines ideas. But if you are as busy as I am, you might be looking for some last-minute ideas. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have recently completed a few sets of Valentines activities: a note-spelling set with super cute Valentine graphics and two sets which use text-based rhythms from conversation heart candies. See samples of my layered ostinatos, composition cards, and measure mats below. I also composed a little poem to help students laugh at and feel comfortable working with the mushy text on candy hearts, which I will share below as a freebie.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(1) Model by chanting the poem with an animated voice to a steady beat. (2) Have students pat the beat with 'spider legs' on thighs as you repeat it and match accented syllables to the beat. (3) Add the actions/body percussion and practice. (Notes: actions are directly under the syllables they occur on. 'Open' is a silent gesture, as if opening a card. 'Brush' as if trying to get clean.) (4) Perform body percussion without audible text (but thinking the words and maintaining a steady beat). (5) Divide the class into two groups and perform, beginning one stanza apart (as a round). If students are ready, perform this as a three- or four-part canon. Have fun! : ) </span><br />

(A shout-out to these wonderful teachers and their administrator!) The only downside is that I've had very little time to blog or work on personal projects. But with the Winter Olympics coming up, I do want to post a few favorite ideas and let my followers know about my Winter Games sets. </i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My students and I have had a lot of fun and success with a 'Music Olympics' theme, based on both summer and winter events. And the teachers I've shared this with have reported great success as well. Here's an outline of some of my favorite activities:</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N5mnj7ZvOBQ/UvGnvjaryVI/AAAAAAAABJQ/gKp3vrHpktc/s1600/Winter+Games+medals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N5mnj7ZvOBQ/UvGnvjaryVI/AAAAAAAABJQ/gKp3vrHpktc/s1600/Winter+Games+medals.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A few of my printables and medals made from chocolate coins.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I create an 'OPENING CEREMONY' by having students move to a piece composed for the Olympics. My favorite pieces for this segment are Leo Arnaud's "Bugler's Dream" </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">and John Williams' "Call of the the Champions" and "Olympic Spirit." </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Whether I have the children march and wave small flags (which I use for patriotic programs), move freely with ribbons, or engage them in choreographing a piece, my main objectives are to have them experience and express the joy and majesty of these pieces and hear the music multiple times. Once they've experienced the music and developed positive feelings about it, we are ready to explore the elements embedded in the music: rhythm, melody, texture, timbre, dynamics, etc. I do this simply and actively, often by challenging them to order cards containing melody, rhythm, or form patterns. Some Olympic melodic themes are very simple (even pentatonic). What a thrill for the kiddos to discover this! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Next, I introduce (or review) common competitive events by showing brief video clips from the Official Olympics Website or YouTube. One really fun (and easy) activity I've done involves turning off the sound and having students create a soundtrack for the video clip. (I have also used the soundtrack technique at a much deeper level with middle and high school instrumental students.) Here's a sample sound track with graphic notation:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On the same day (or the next if time runs short) I give students text-based rhythm cards (with winter games words), which they use to compose measures. I have students add actions to their words/rhythms and perform them/teach them to the class. Being passionate about teaching composition early, I then have students combine their patterns to create various A-B forms or rondos. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In a subsequent lesson(s), I create 'Music Olympics' centers, through which small groups rotate. Students actually work quite hard in these, but the novel activities feel like play. Some of the activities I use include note-placement on a floor staff (curling), slalom (racing through a course of music symbols), meter races (placing barlines), vocal explorations (half pipe or aerials), and note-spelling down a 'luge' course, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I create medals (for everyone) with ribbon and foil-covered chocolate coins... so cute! You can also purchase inexpensive (plastic) medals through Party Land or Oriental Trading. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I hope these ideas inspire you to try something like this with your students. It can be a lot of work, but it's worth it... and hey, it <u>doesn't have to be a lot of work</u> because... this year, I finally compiled three 'Winter Games' packets! These contain my best 'Winter Games' ideas, detailed teaching guides, links to resources including an online playlist, and a lot of useful ready-to-go printables -- everything needed to 'host' a great event (one day or several lessons). If you're thinking of doing a 'Music Olympics' this year or 'Winter Games' <i>any year</i>, please check out my materials. I've really put a lot of work into these so you won't have to, and I think you and your students will have great success with them. Thanks for stopping by!</span><br />

Mine were <u>wonderful</u> and filled with family fun. And now it's back to work for me... At least I'm passionate about what I do! : )<br /><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>I am excited about some music activities related to <span style="color: red;">Chinese New Year and the Chinese Zodiac</span>, which I'll be doing in January and February. I have recently completed a packet of music literacy activities for Chinese New Year and two related, educational games for classroom projection or computer center. </span><br />

(It always begins on the second new moon/no moon after Winter Solstice.) This holiday inspires many cultural and musical connections. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here are a few integration ideas and a printable music activity freebie (grayscale option and more links below):</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Chinese New Year is the longest and most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. In China, people take time off work (sometimes several weeks) to get ready for and celebrate the New Year. Chinese New Year is also called "Spring Festival' because people are preparing to say goodbye to winter and greet the 'new' year (spring). These are some things people do to celebrate Chinese New Year:<br /> <span style="color: black;"> Have <strong>family reunion feasts</strong></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;"> Decorate with <strong>poems on red paper</strong></span></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> <strong>Give money</strong> in red envelopes<br /> <strong>Shoot off or watch fireworks</strong> (to scare away evil spirits)<br /> <strong>Wear red clothing</strong> </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> (Red represents fire which can keep bad luck away.)<br /> <strong>Clean their houses</strong> to sweep away any bad fortune and make room </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> for good luck<br /> <strong>Participate in the Lantern Festival</strong> (On the 15th day, people hang </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> lanterns in temples and carry them to an evening parade.)<br /> <strong>Participate in a Dragon Dance or parade</strong> (This is the highlight of </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> the Lantern Festival on the 15th day. Long dragons made of paper, </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> silk, and bamboo are held in the air by a line of dancing young men </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;"> who wind through the streets of the town.)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: x-small;">Consider which of these activities could be adapted and added to enhance students' enjoyment and understanding, e.g. wear red clothing, clean the classroom, create poems or red paper, create and decorate paper lanterns, or create a long paper dragon and a dragon dance. </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Calibri; language: en-US; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-color-index: 1; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-font-kerning: 12.0pt; mso-style-textfill-fill-alpha: 100.0%; mso-style-textfill-fill-color: black; mso-style-textfill-fill-themecolor: text1; mso-style-textfill-type: solid;">Have children move/dance

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #38761d;">Wow, December is upon us just like that! Celebrating Thanksgiving so late in November seems to have shortened the Christmas season a bit, so some of you may be looking to simplify holiday lessons or performances. Here's an easy, fun (yet worthwhile) activity I'll be doing with K-2 classes at several schools this month.</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Practice chanting the poem to a steady beat first. Then have students play assigned bells on the beat, and sing all syllables that belong to one beat on the pitch the designated bell produces. I have several of these I hope to add to my TPT store soon. For now, here's a freebie 4 U. Enjoy it with your kiddos! : )</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">I'm back : ) I finished the set of </span></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="font-size: large;"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Rhymes and Chimes for Christmas Time</span></strong>, </span><span style="font-size: small;">and I'm having so much FUN with this! I designed this material for myself, K-3 classroom teachers, music teachers, home-schoolers, and families. There are some great language fluency skills that come with this 'spoon full of sugar,' and the language concepts and activities flow into musical ones so easily. Also, this is the easiest way to put together a musical performance with bells and young children. Here are some sample pages:</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #cc0000;"></span> </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;">I created five pieces with five options for each: poem text, poem text with accented syllables (the ones bells will be played on), colored text, colored text with bell icons, and actual notation for teacher reference or older students. (Teachers and students don't need to be able to read the music notation to be successful with this.) I've also included a sheet of printable labels to color-code plain chimes or bells.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><strong>Here come the holidays!</strong></span> And here's one my favorite holiday play-along activities for classroom, music room or easy-to-prepare performance. This video has been a favorite with many student groups (and their teachers).</span> <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><span style="color: #38761d;">In appreciation of my followers and TPT customers, I want to share it here. This activity will help students experience and explore timbre, melody, form, and rhythm ostinatos in a joyful, novel way.</span> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana;"><strong><span style="color: #cc0000;">I</span><span style="color: #cc0000;">nstructions</span></strong></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You will need one pair of rhythm sticks and one wrist bell band for each student. I make wrist bells by stringing three jingle bells onto a piece of braided (flat) elastic. These are a great investment and will serve you well for many years.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1wrhoJUWIrM/UowHyPV31GI/AAAAAAAAA_8/V88qTuO12ac/s1600/xoxo+f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1wrhoJUWIrM/UowHyPV31GI/AAAAAAAAA_8/V88qTuO12ac/s320/xoxo+f.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Have students put the wrist bell band on their dominant wrist -- the one they use to hold their top rhythm stick. Have them play along with the video, reading the iconic notation for the ostinatos. The "X" means to tap their sticks on a beat, and the "O" means to shake their bells (while still holding sticks). </span><br />

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #cc0000;">For younger students, use the macro beat, at a tempo of 82 BPM. For older students or adults, use the micro beat at a tempo of 164.</span> </span><br />

I love autumn time, especially because of <span style="color: orange;">Thanksgiving</span>. A couple of weeks ago, I presented a day-long workshop with a bunch of Thanksgiving music ideas, and I want to share a singing game that was a hit.</span></span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_8-b_se4WGU/UoI_qnBZspI/AAAAAAAAA-w/V_j0jsF6ESM/s1600/Turkey,+Trot!.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_8-b_se4WGU/UoI_qnBZspI/AAAAAAAAA-w/V_j0jsF6ESM/s400/Turkey,+Trot!.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You can download this singing game and teaching guide in a tidy one-page format FREE from my TPT store by clicking </span><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Turkey-Trot-Thanksgiving-Singing-Game-do-re-mi-so-la-ta-ti-ti-970331" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">HERE.</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span></span></span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Singing Game Directions</span></strong></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Have students form two concentric circles (one inside the other with 2/5 of the class as the inner ring, and 3/5 as the outer). Model the song for students and ask them to listen carefully. Then ask them some questions about the song and sing the answers. (For example, "What three things does the turkey need to trot through?") Check student understanding of the meanings of "trot" and "dawdle." <br />
<br />
Next, have children listen to and immediately echo each phrase you sing to them. Then combine two phrases, and finally, sing the entire piece. Invite students to hold hands with their neighbors, sing, and step to the beat, with the inner circle moving clockwise while the outer circle moves counter-clockwise. Repeat singing and stepping, and this time, raise and lower held-hands in this pattern: first phrase - low, second phrase - high above heads, third phrase - low, and fourth phrase - high. (This will create openings for the farmer and turkey to move through.) <br />
<br />
Select one student to be the 'farmer' and another to be the 'bird.' The bird/turkey will stand in the center of the inside ring, and the farmer will stand outside the outer ring. When singing begins, the farmer will move in after the turkey, while the turkey avoids the farmer and works to get 'free' (outside both circles without getting tagged by the farmer). If the farmer tags the turkey, s/he becomes the new turkey, and the former turkey selects a new farmer and takes his/her place in the circle. If the farmer doesn't tag the turkey, both players will quickly select their replacements and take their places in the circle(s). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><strong>Build Concepts and Skills</strong> <br />
(1) Have students sing the song, omitting the word/note on the fourth beat of each measure. Help them discover/identify the s-s l-l s-m melody pattern which occurs on the first three beats of each measure. Have students sing and sign the pattern four times, resting or clapping on the fourth beat, as you quickly write it on the board (as if taking dictation). Put a question mark for each fourth beat. Guide students in discovering and comparing the phrase endings (so, re, do). (2) Explore/identify the rhythms of “trot” / “gobble.” Create a one-measure rhythm ostinato using these words, and accompany the song with it. Enjoy! </span></div>

The first six weeks of school have kept me busier than I'd like to be, but I'm enjoying new friendships and opportunities to develop and share ideas and materials. I've finally found time to put some of my autumn rhythm activities in a shareable format, and I want to give a brief outline of what I do and highlight a few of my recent publications.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I love using Gunild Keetman's Rhythm Building Blocks/Bricks to explore the rhythms embedded in language (and vice versa)! Here are some of my favorite rhythmic language activities which use Rhythm Building Blocks:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> * Extract two-beat patterns from simple poetry (or lyrics) and match </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> them to corresponding Building Blocks. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> * Create a list of themed words and phrases and then explore/match </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> their rhythms to the Building Blocks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> * Give students word/phrase slips and have them discover and write</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> the rhythm notation above the words. Then have students work in </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> groups of four to create and share a performance sequence.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> * Then have students compose using body percussion or a limited </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"> tone set </span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">based on their rhythms.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">A couple of hints: (1) Choose text carefully to set students up for joyful and successful learning. Whenever possible, use separate words for separate beats or subdivisions. For example, "falling leaves" for 'ti-ti tah' or 'tiki-ti.' (2) This traditionally K-2 technique works very well with older students and more complex notation. For example, a two beat rhythm comprised of a quarter note and two eighth notes sounds the same as a one-beat pattern comprised of one eighth note with two sixteenth notes. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Elementary music teachers have the unique opportunity to teach and touch the lives of nearly every child who attends their school.</span> <span style="font-size: large;">This creates a special </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">challenge: <em>learning students' names</em>.</span> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #f1c232;"><strong><span style="color: red;">N</span><span style="color: orange;">a</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">m</span><span style="color: #6fa8dc;">e</span> <span style="color: #674ea7;">g</span><span style="color: #a64d79;">a</span><span style="color: red;">m</span><span style="color: #f6b26b;">e</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">s</span></strong></span> are a great way to welcome and engage students at the first of a school year, while at the same time, provide opportunities to connect faces and names and assess in-tune singing.</span> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here's a fun name game for younger students that's worked well for me. I'm posting this as <strong><span style="color: #f1c232;">a FREEBIE on TPT for my followers and blog visitors </span></strong>in hopes you will find it a useful and joyful way to build rapport during the first quarter of the school year. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This 7-page packet in PDF format includes two singing games, detailed lesson guides, and printable/projectable graphics to enhance the lessons. I have used my Note-able Font and Colorful Music Clip Art to create this and demonstrate these products in action. Enjoy : )</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Another very <span style="color: black;">useful technique for getting to know students' names</span> is to create <strong><span style="color: red;">s</span><span style="color: orange;">e</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">a</span><span style="color: #6fa8dc;">t</span><span style="color: #674ea7;">i</span><span style="color: #a64d79;">n</span><span style="color: red;">g </span><span style="color: #f6b26b;">c</span><span style="color: #6aa84f;">h<span style="color: #6fa8dc;">a</span><span style="color: #674ea7;">r</span><span style="color: #a64d79;">t</span><span style="color: red;">s</span></span></strong> for each class.</span> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yes, this takes time, but it's <em>so worthwhile</em> to see a child's face light up when you call him/her by name! (And after calling a student by his/her correct name a few times, I find I can remember it). Here is a unique elementary music seating chart/roll template I developed in an effort to keep everything on one page - seat boxes for names with record keeping boxes attached to each 'seat.' <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The chart is laid out as the teacher sees the room from the front, and it groups students for quick teaming and collaborative work. I always keep an aisle down the center of the rows to facilitate proximity/behavior management and easy movement. </span>Even though elementary classes involve a lot of movement and activity, having assigned spots makes classroom management much easier. Students know where to go as they enter the room, and I'm able to quickly record attendance, pass-offs, behavior issues, etc. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="color: black;">You can print the sheet I'm posting here (just click on it to save and print),</span> or you can find an editable template in Word format here: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/All-in-One-Seating-Chart-Roll-Template-for-Music-and-other-Classes-Editable-862478" target="_blank">All-in-One Seating, Roll and Record Chart - Editable Template</a></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As each new school year begins, I find myself re-evaluating, goal-setting and anticipating a joyful year. I feel very blessed to have a career doing something I love! A perspective that keeps me going year after year and guides me in creating meaningful and joyful music lessons and materials is this: </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><strong><em><span style="font-size: large;">The prize is in the process!</span></em></strong> </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I adopted this mantra years ago, and it has helped me focus on my students' needs and allowed me to enjoy my work much more than I did early in my career. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As music teachers, we often feel pressured to have our students present, perform, and even compete. But the truly great musical learning moments take place while we're exploring, evaluating, creating, and refining a piece of music. While preparing to perform music helps us set goals, the actual performance is simply a 'snapshot' in time and hardly a true reflection of the wondrous process that has taken place and the learning that will last a lifetime. I have found that 'inform-ances' are usually more meaningful for my students and their audiences (who are mainly family members genuinely interested in what students are learning). This has relieved a lot of pressure and brought much more satisfaction and joy to my work. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wggAWwWlniA/Uh7SYiCSCKI/AAAAAAAAA1U/_54m-lsGUr4/s1600/Amplify+that+joy!.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wggAWwWlniA/Uh7SYiCSCKI/AAAAAAAAA1U/_54m-lsGUr4/s400/Amplify+that+joy!.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">When I recently came across this quote, it resonated deeply with me. So I created a poster for my office to remind myself to amplify the innate joy of learning and making music. (It's a bit wordy but SO powerful. Go ahead; re-read it.) I'm posting it here for my visitors to print and enjoy. (Just click on the picture to open and print it.)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Wishing you a <span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><strong><em>JOY<span style="color: black;">ful</span></em></strong></span> school year!</span> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br />
